GED vs IGCSE

GED vs IGCSE: Which Should My Teen Choose in Phuket?

A clear, parent-friendly comparison of the GED and the IGCSE — timeline, cost, university recognition, and how to pick the right pathway for your teenager.

At WIN we offer both the GED and the IGCSE pathway — taught in English, personalised by AI, mentored by qualified teachers. Families often ask us the same question: which one is right for my teen? Here's the honest, non-marketing answer.

The one-line summary

The GED is a US-based, fast-track high-school equivalency you can typically finish in 9–18 months. The IGCSE is the British international curriculum, taken subject-by-subject over roughly two years, and usually a stepping stone to A-levels, the IB Diploma or a UK-style university route.

Recognition

Both are internationally recognised. The GED is accepted by most US universities, many UK and EU universities, and by the Thai Ministry of Education as equivalent to upper-secondary completion. The IGCSE is the standard British qualification, expected by A-level and IB programs, and recognised by universities worldwide.

Timeline

GED: motivated students often finish in 9–18 months. IGCSE: typically a two-year run, exams sat in May/June or October/November.

Cost

GED: four subject tests at roughly USD 80 each — about USD 320 total in exam fees. IGCSE: paid per subject via the accredited centre, roughly 6,000–9,000 THB per subject; a full nine-subject sitting is still a fraction of one year at a traditional international school.

Which teen suits which pathway?

Consider the GED if your teen is 16+, motivated, wants to move quickly, has a serious passion project or certification (dive master, pilot, sailing, entrepreneurship), and is heading for US / EU / Thai international-program universities or straight into work. Consider the IGCSE if your teen is 13–16, wants a broader subject base, is transferring from a British-system school, or is aiming at A-levels, the IB Diploma or a UK / Commonwealth university.

How WIN handles both

Same building, same day, same rhythm. Mornings are for AI-personalised academic study in English — GED or IGCSE — with 1:1 mentor support in a class of no more than 20. Afternoons are for the WIN project. You don't have to lock the pathway in on day one; we'll help you choose during the admissions conversation, and we can flex as your teen grows.
