IGCSE
IGCSE in Thailand: The Parent's Guide (2026)
What the IGCSE is, how it works in Thailand, which subjects to pick, how much it costs, and how AI-personalised prep is changing the game for families in Phuket.
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the world's most widely recognised British international qualification for 14–16 year olds. In Thailand, it's the credential most families take when they want a broad, rigorous, English-medium foundation before A-levels, the IB Diploma or university abroad.
What the IGCSE actually is
Awarded by boards such as Cambridge (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel, the IGCSE is taken subject-by-subject. Students typically sit between five and nine subjects, with English, Mathematics and Sciences as the core, and a personalised selection of humanities, languages and electives around them.
Where do students sit the exams?
Official IGCSE exams are sat at accredited exam centres, including several in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. Exams run in May/June and October/November series each year, giving families real flexibility.
Cost
Fees are paid per subject to the exam board via the accredited centre. As a rule of thumb, families should budget roughly 6,000–9,000 THB per subject for entry fees, plus tuition. Even a full nine-subject sitting is a fraction of a year at a traditional international school.
Why English-medium AI prep works so well
IGCSE is a big syllabus per subject, and every student has their own strong and weak areas. AI-personalised learning — delivered in English by qualified mentor teachers — diagnoses exactly where each student is and rebuilds their daily study plan. The result: less wasted time, higher grades, and afternoons free for a real passion project.
Who the IGCSE suits
Younger teens (13–16), students continuing from a British-system school, and anyone heading toward A-levels, the IB, or a UK / Commonwealth university. If your teen is older, more independent, and wants to finish faster, the GED is often the better fit — see our GED-vs-IGCSE comparison.
